The 55th running of the Irish Derby was held on Wednesday 23rd June 1920 over 1 mile 4 furlongs of The Curragh. Subscriptions were 50 sovereigns with a pot of 4990 sovereigns, 150 sovereigns to the second and 50 sovereigns to the third. The winner was owned and bred in Ireland by Captain Henry Whitworth, trained by Joseph Butters and ridden by Fred Templeman. The winner won by a length in 2 minutes 40 seconds, with half a length between second and third. |

JOCKEY PROFILE
Frederick George Templeman was born into a racing family in Hertford on 10th February 1892. His father William was a jockey, but his most famous ancestor was Sim Templeman who had ridden 3 Derby and 3 Oaks winners. Fred followed in the family tradition and became a jockey by the age of 13. He first rode in the Epsom Derby in 1916 when Kwang-Su finished second behind Fifinella (SR 2055), but then won his only Derby in 1919 on Grand Parade (SR 1968). His final Epsom Derby ride was on the unplaced He Goes in 1920 behind Spion Kop (SR 1909)., but a few weeks later he landed the Irish Derby with He Goes (SR 1879) on his only ride in the race. After his successful riding career he became a trainer in Lambourn, although his achievements never reached the dizzy heights of his riding career, and he died on 17th May 1973 aged 81. |
